The elephant, symbol of the Fon, is represented in this mask made of cloth, woven plants, and beadwork. This contemporary version is usually worn with a wide flat hat to support it on the head of a dancer.

The image of the eagle with the two smaller birds on its wings (kpono) represents the virtues of the sambali, the champion cultivator. Kpono encouraged others to work harder and excel.
Masquerade with Feathers

This metal sculpture was created by renowned sculptor Sokari Douglas Camp. Nigerian born, Camp lives and works in London, England. This sculpture represents the female water spirit Alagba, a character who appears in Sekiapu Society masked dance performances. Sekiapu literally means "dancing" so this society is exclusively a masquerade or dance society with dances performed by men.

This table was likely used as a platform for a wine calabash. The elaborate cowrie shell seat and beaded sides suggest it belonged to a royal court. The table would have been placed beside a chief's throne.
