Series 1 Board of Directors and Corporate Structure. -- 1972-1985. -- The series consists of the certificate of incorporation, constitution and bylaws of ATP, including modifications to the latter. This is followed by information on the company’s corporate structure and its policies. The evolution of the artistic and corporate policy as it adapted to changing needs can be traced through these records. The minutes of the Board of Directors from 1972 to 1981 are includes and are relatively intact, although it is difficult to be sure about the early years since meetings were held at irregular intervals. The minutes give detailed insights into the effects of financial realities on artistic decisions. They also go into fundraising and marketing strategies in some depth. Perhaps the most important information to be discerned is the gradual movement away from a two person company (Riske and Wagner) to a corporate entity increasingly dominated by the Board of Directors. The reports presented to the Board from 1972 to 1985 provide a summary of every aspect of company activity in each season.

Series 3 Theatre-in-Education - Productions. -- 1972-1983. -- The series consists of production notes, prompt scripts and programs for each play. Some of the production information is quite sparse from 1972 to 1973 since the company was more concerned with day-to-day survival rather than with keeping accurate records. The production information that has survived is not in any particular order, but the material included is as follows: casting and cast lists; technical information; prop, costume and set breakdowns; scene breakdowns; rehearsal schedule and closing notice; housemanager reports; stage manager reports. The prompt scripts include all dialogue and changes thereto, music and lyrics, lighting and sound cues and blocking. Lighting and scenic designs are found in the oversize series.

Series 5 Administration. -- 1972-1982. - The series consists of alphabetically-arranged files. Although some of the information seems scanty, a good deal of the records were duplicated in other series and therefore discarded. The files are most useful in the areas of ATP’s dealing with Equity, government departments (both provincial and federal), the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and royalty/rights information. Much of the rest of the series cover aspects of the day to day working of the company and is largely in the form of internal memos and correspondence.

Series 6 Theatre-in-Education - Administration. -- 1972-1982. -- The series consists of alphabetically-arranged files which deal strictly with administrative aspects pertaining to the Theatre-in-Education program. Among the most important records in this series are those relating to Alberta Theatre Projects’ dealing with the Calgary Public and Separate School Boards. Another area of interest is the collection of artwork and letters sent to ATP by students in appreciation of the productions. There are also evaluations by students and teachers of the program and samples of the prep and follow-up material supplied to the schools by ATP. The rest of the files are related to the general aspects of running the Theatre-in-Education program.

Series 7 Financial and fundraising. -- 1971-1981. -- The series consists of records about all financial aspects of Alberta Theatere Project’s activities. Since a relatively small percentage of ATP’s income is derived from actual seat sales, the fundraising efforts are inextricably interwoven with the overall financial picture. The major sources of revenue are government grants, which were quite often tied directly to the level of corporate and private donations. Government grants are received at the federal, provincial and municipal levels from the Canada Council, Province of Alberta, Alberta Foundation for the Performing Arts and the Calgary Region Arts Foundation. The fundraising campaign is traditionally kicked off each season with the Bob Edwards Luncheon, a high class appeal to Calgary’s corporate citizenry.

The material is mostly news releases (for all media forms), reviews of productions and interview articles. Some memos and correspondence are included. Although the reviews are only one person’s opinion, they generally give a good outline of the production and rebuttals are included if the public reaction radically differed from that of the critic.

Series 12 Videos. -- 1972-1988. -- The series consists of video footage of several complete productions from 1972 to 1977. The productions are from both the Theatre-in-Education program and the Adult subscription season, and were all filmed in black and white. Four of the tapes are prep and follow up material given to teachers as an aid to tie the production to school curriculum. The productions were all shot from a stationary camera at the back of the Canmore Opera House, and the only camera effect employed was the occasional use of a zoom lens. Sound and picture quality are quite good. Also includes some videos of plays from the 1986-1988 seasons.
