Series 1 | Personal records. -
1939-1964. - John Blackmore was a man of varied concerns and this series, arranged
chronologically, contains information he collected and/or wrote on a number of his interests.
Prominent amongst the material are various religious tracts and correspondence about Latter Day
Saints Church doctrine. Included as well are some letters on family, financial and political
affairs; an autobiography of Blackmore's early life; invitations and programmes from both
Cardston
and Ottawa; and copies of radio scripts (see also Series 12- radio broadcasts, 1935-1958). A
copy of R. W. Pilling's The Blue Flame is held within these records as are a few
family photographs. |

Series 2 | Personal- Political
correspondence. - 1945-1964. - This series consists of notes between Blackmore and his
colleagues in the House of Commons, clippings from magazines and newspapers about his
career, and letters received from constituents and friends asking for assistance or expressing their
support, particularly over the Lethbridge Herald brouhaha. |

Series 3 | Personal- Family
correspondence. - 1951. - The Blackmore family were prolific letter writers and this series
contains their correspondence from 1951. Files M-100-11, M-100-12, M-100-15, and M-100-16
contain notes sent by John to his wife, Emily, while he was in Ottawa for sessions of the House
of Commons. Messages commence on March 3 and continue until June 20 then resume on
October 5 and go until December 19. For much of this period John wrote daily, sometimes,
reporting on mundane matters like the weather and his routine, often times critiquing his and
others' performance in the House, but always, expressing his love and affection for Emily. File
M-100-13 contains one letter from Emily to John reporting on family happenings and Cardston
events. File M-100-17 contains more of the same type of letters from the Blackmore children,
especially Verla, who tells of life in Washington, D. C. where she spent time as a Mormon
missionary. M-100-18 contains invitations. |

Series 4 | Teaching
Records, Raymond, Alberta. - 1921-1931. - Blackmore's chosen vocation was teaching and a
preferred avocation was leading Sunday school classes for his church. The material here reflects
those interests. File M-100-19 has an annotated copy of the 1931 Departmental Examination and
the 1921 results for thirteen students. File M-100-20 has three Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints' Teacher Training Texts with lesson questions prepared by Blackmore
himself. |

Series 5 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Office Administration records. - 1943-1953. - These records,
comprised of forms, notices, correspondence, bills, and index, diaries, and a cash receipt book;
result from workings of Blackmore's office from 1943-1958. With rare exceptions, the diaries
are not an account of his feelings, but rather a collection of facts like reading lists, addresses,
appointments, and other reminders. There are, however, jottings on the action Blackmore took in
response to constituents' requests which provide greater insight into how his time was spent each
day. |

Series 6 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Speeches. - 1935-1958. - Like any politician, Blackmore gave
speeches and this series contains one he delivered in the House of Commons, to groups on
Ottawa, and among constituents back in Alberta. Spanning the entire length of his parliamentary
career and ranging over the variety of his interests, but particularly focussed on Social Credit
economic theory and the Communist conspiracy, the speeches are written with distinctive red and
blue pencil in note form. Some complete are presented as recorded in the House of
Commons Debates. Another sense of Blackmore's ideas can be gleaned from the research
notes and pamphlets contained within the files. Finally, a few examples of Blackmore's
preparation of questions for committee hearings are included. |

Series 7 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Radio broadcasts. - 1935-1958. - Social Credit politicians
realized radio was an important means of communication and Blackmore used the airwaves to
reach his constituents. Through an arrangement with the radio bureau programme and news
service
in Ottawa and CJOC, a Lethbridge station, he had a ten minute programme every second Sunday
evening to speak to southern Albertans. This series contains the actual scripts used and
mimeographed transcripts that apparently were distributed to listeners. The speeches themselves
can be placed into two general categories; one where Blackmore comments on issues of the day,
as in the April 20, 1956 broadcast concerning the devil in the Queen's hair and the other where
he deals with long term concerns like the set delivered from January 24 to May 9, 1954 about the
Communist menace. Of particular interest, too, are the speeches Blackmore made in response to
Lethbridge Herald reports and editorials which provide fascinating insight into the interplay
between politics and the media. There is also a small amount of research material and business
correspondence. |

Series 8 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Subject files. - 1935-1950. - This series contains the
correspondence, press releases, government documents, committee submissions, periodicals,
newspaper clippings and other assorted material accumulated by Blackmore's office over a
fourteen year period. Much of it dates from the Second World War period and it has been left in
its original order, that is alphabetically arranged subject files. From them, it is possible to gain
insight into the areas of expertise Blackmore developed (files M-100-190-M-100-207 which deal
with various aspects of the sugar beet industry is a good illustration), the work he was called
upon to do not only by his constituents, but also by other Canadians (such as the requests for
passports found in file M-100-169 and assistance rendered veterans in files M-100-222-M-100-228
respectively), and finally the people who regularly passed on ideas and theories to him (the C. W.
Deans letters file M-100-120 are among Blackmore's more intriguing
correspondents). |

drafts and completed manuscripts along with correspondence detailing requests for books,
reviews, and dealings with the publishers. Although his book, Money the Master
Key ([Toronto and Gardenvale: Garden City Press, 1939]) is not included here, a copy can

Series 10 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Letter books. - 1939-1948. - For a short time one of the
procedures in Blackmore's office was the keeping of day files. The first of these covers the
period from October to November 1939 while the second which also has some incoming letters
filed in it, ranged intermittently over the months of August 1947, October 1947 and August 1948.
In them, Blackmore lays out his feelings about taking on the leadership of the Social Credit
Movement and responds to a series of constituents' requests, including the possibility of
transporting southern Albertan farmers and combines to help with the Argentinian
harvest. |

Series 11 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Subject Files. - 1949 (1950) -1958. - As with Series 8 -
Member of Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Subject files 1935-1949, this series appears to be the
files from Blackmore's parliamentary office. They continue on to cover the period from 1949 to
1958 and remain arranged alphabetically in subject areas. Many of the topics carry over from the
previous series so added information can be found here on the sugar beet industry, veterans
cases, as well as other topics. In addition, there arose many new concerns, like the reaction to
Blackmore's defence of Senator Joseph McCarthy (files M-100-309-M-100-329) and his effort to
aid in Social Credit organizing (files M-100-347-M-100-349), which can be examined from the
correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, brochures, newsletters, briefs, policy
statements, petitions, and sundry other materials contained within this series. |

Series 12 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Nominal Files. - 1950-1958. - Containing the office files for the
last period of Blackmore's tenure as a Member of Parliament, this series, unlike the others, is
arranged alphabetically according to surname of the correspondent. A good portion of the records
are letters from constituents requesting their representative's assistance with pension cases,
income tax troubles, and immigration requests or local business and towns asking for his aid in
tendering for government business and getting federal grants. Certain subjects, particularly
Blackmore's concern about communism, carry over from previous series, though the nominal
arrangement does not make conducive for finding the material easily. It is easy from the
arrangement, however, to see that Blackmore had regular correspondence offering him
information and opinions, which affords an insight into the exchange over issues that goes on
between a M. P. and the public. |

Series 13 | Member of
Parliament, Lethbridge, Alberta- Annotated publications. - 1935-1958. - Blackmore was a
conscientious writer, always striving to document the facts contained in his speeches. This
feature is reflected in this series of books and pamphlets. Not only are they reference sources on
topics- Social Credit monetary theory and communist conspiracy- which he dealt with frequently,
but also are extensively annotated with certain sentences marked, important passages underlined,
some pages flagged, and extensive notes made, either in the margins and inside covers or on
separate sheets. |

Series 14 | Political
Activity- Social Credit Party. - 1958-1963. - This series of records seem to have been collected
by Blackmore after his election defeat in 1958. Although not very extensive, the material does
contain some interesting items, particularly the Social Credit newsletters and pamphlets which
reveal Blackmore's continued interest in the movement and the letters from his former secretary
which provide an outlook on the Ottawa political scene after his departure. |

Series 15 | Political
Activity- Speeches. - 1959-1963. - Even though he was no longer a public figure, Blackmore
continued to speak before audiences. This series contains his notes, still written in distinctive red
and blue pencil, for speeches given before a Home and School Association and the 1962
Lethbridge Social Credit nominating convention. Interestingly, in the latter case, two talks were
prepared, one in which Blackmore expresses his willingness to accept a second "mission" for the
movement and the other in which he alludes to a conspiracy against the British white race. Since
the first was used and the second not, these records are interesting for what they do and do not
reveal about the man. |
