This copy of the Ewers papers was provided to the Glenbow Archives by the Smithsonian Institution in 2006, as a result of the specific request by Red Crow Community College on the Blood reserve to the Smithsonian.

The originals are held by the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, and have been published here courtesy of this institution.

Permission to publish, broadcast or exhibit this material must be requested in writing from the Smithsonian.

Blackfoot research - Correspondence. -- 1955-1956. -- Consists of correspondence between John C. Ewers (Associate Curator of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution) and Hugh Dempsey (of the Alberta Publicity Bureau and later the Glenbow Museum). The letters discuss their respective Blackfoot research.

Blood Motoki Society notes. -- 1951-1962. -- Consists of research notes of John C. Ewers (Associate Curator of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution), about the Motoki (also spelled Matoki) Society of the Bloods in southern Alberta. Percy Creighton was one of his primary informants about this women's society. Includes part of a Clark Wissler's manuscript on the subject.

Field notes - Blood encampment, Blood Reserve, Alberta. -- 1951. -- Consists of handwritten field notes kept by Ewers while visiting the Blood reserve in southern Alberta. His informants were Percy Creighton, Frank Red Crow and Cecile Black Boy, and topics covered include Matoki (also spelled Motoki) Society, quillwork, the Beaver Bundle, headdresses, tanning, medicine pipes, bags, and other material culture items.. There is an index at the beginning of the first part.
