Canol Project – 1942-1982. -- 2 m of textual records. -- The Canol Project had three main phases – the development and increased crude oil output of the Norman Wells field in the North West Territories; the construction of a 600-mile pipeline from the field to Whitehorse in the Yukon; and the building of a refinery at Whitehorse. Imperial Oil was brought into the project in May, 1942 and soon commenced drilling 62 new wells, of which 59 were producing. A "pre-fab " camp was set up on the refinery side of the Mackenzie River for members of staff. On the opposite side of the river was an army camp and Camp Canol (later a base for Norman Exploration which carried on where Canol left off). -- Series consists of material from Ted Link fonds relating to the Canol Project and records from Imperial Oil Limited relating to the Canol Project. |
