In February, 1916 a refinery was built in Regina, Saskatchewan followed later that year by one in Montreal, Quebec. In 1932, a refinery was established at Norman Wells in the North West Territories. A refinery operated in Whitehorse, Yukon, from 1944-1945 which, after the second World was no longer needed and was hauled piecemeal to Edmonton to become Imperial’s eighth refinery which began operation in 1948. | Series IP-17 | Canol Project. -- 1944. -- 35 cm of photographs. -- The Canol Project was conceived during the Second World War after the Japanese attacked petroleum installations in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Concerns about attacks on shipping lanes in the Pacific Ocean triggered the need for an inland, domestic source of fuel. It was determined that the oil field at Norman Wells could increase its production and send crude oil by pipeline to a refinery to be built at Whitehorse, Yukon. The project was to include a road, pipeline and telephone lines from Norman Wells to Johnson’s Crossing, then along the Alaska Highway to Whitehorse. The work began in 1943 and was completed by February 16, 1944. In April, 1944, the first oil reached Whitehorse. By this time however, the Japanese had been driven from the Aleutian Islands and the project lost its strategic importance. The refined fuel was very expensive, so in April of 1945, after less than a year of operation, the entire project was abandoned. -- Series consists of photographs taken by two photographers employed by Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) showing personnel and living conditions in Camp Canol which was located on the shore of the Mackenzie River across from Norman Wells; the oil field and refinery at Norman Wells; transportation of supplies to Camp Canol and the smaller camps along the Canol Road as construction progressed away from the main camp; building of the Canol Road and laying pipe line; pumping stations between Camp Canol and Whitehorse; views of Imperial Oil Limited operations around Norman Wells.
