THEATRE CALGARY PRODUCTION
RECORDS |
Series
15 | Mainstage. -- 1969-1984. -- The central activity of any theatre company is,
of course, the production of plays. What distinguishes one production from another, however,
and one company from another, is the manner in which the plays are produced - the set designs,
the use of lights, and the perspective taken by the director. The mood and tone of a production is
determined by which aspects of the play the director decides to emphasize. -- The series consists
of the prompt scripts and production information which are the essence of Theatre Calgary and
its Mainstage productions from 1969-1984. |

Series 16 | Second
Stage. -- 1977-1979. -- In 1977 Harold Baldridge introduced a "Second Stage" series of plays

17 | Midnight Series. -- 1979-1982. -- The Midnight Series replaced Second
Stage as a forum for the production of "alternate theatre" in 1979. As the name suggests, the
series was produced at midnight on weekends and was intended to attract into the theatre the
young nightclub crowd likely to be downtown late in the evening. -- Unfortunately, the Midnight
Series is very poorly documented and although these files contain scripts of 11 of the 18 plays
produced during the three seasons the series was in existence, only four of these are prompt
scripts. |

18 | Programs. -- 1968-1986. -- Programs are a source of a great deal of
information about a theatre company. In addition to listing the cast of each production, they also
provide a more complete profile of the company's personnel - production, administrative and
office staff. Corporate and private sponsors, whose donations are the lifeblood of any performing
arts company, are also recognized in each program. -- The series consists of a complete set of
programs for Theatre Calgary Mainstage productions from 1968-1986, as well as a number from
the Second Stage and Midnight Series. Programs for MAC productions can be found in Series 3,
and for MAC-14 productions in Series 4. |

THEATRE CALGARY EXTENSION
PROGRAMS |
Series
21 | Caravan / Stage-Coach, Drama Centre, Kaleidoscope, Performing Arts on
Tour, Youtheatre. -- 1969-1984. -- In even its first year in existence, Theatre Calgary had a
children's theatre program and offered workshops in improvisation and basic acting techniques -
it is from these beginnings that the Extension department grew. -- The series consists of the
administrative records of the department from 1969 to1984. There is very little information,
however, on the production of individual plays by Caravan / Stage-Coach or on the activities of
the Drama Centre, and only a few files exist concerning Kaleidoscope, Performing Arts on Tour
and Youtheatre. The series has six sub-series: 1969-1973; 1973-1974; 1974-1975; 1975-1979;
1980-1982; 1982-1984. |

children's plays produced by Stage-Coach. A few files include production information, but like
"Second Stage" and "Midnight Series", Stage-Coach is poorly documented. The series also
includes a few scripts which apparently were not produced by the company, and two files of
research material for Rick McNair's play "Dr. Barnardo's Pioneers". |

THEATRE CALGARY PUBLIC
RELATIONS |
Series 24 | Public
Relations Subject Files. -- 1968-1986. -- The activities of the Public Relations Department are
well documented in this series. The records are alphabetically arranged by season to the early
1980s. In addition to its responsibilities of publicizing the plays both for the Main Stage and
Stage-Coach seasons, organizing season ticket campaigns, writing programs and raising funds
through the annual television auction, the department also acted as liaison with its patrons.
Theatre Calgary received large numbers of letters from the public - both pleased and "irate" - and
these often provide very interesting a and entertaining reading. |
