Glenbow Gift Guide: Staff Picks

Blog

Searching for that perfect gift?  Something that’s unique and that can’t be bought in the big-box stores? We asked a selection of Glenbow staffers to help us curate a list of what they’re buying from the Glenbow Shop – Calgary’s most artful gift shop –  this holiday season. From high-end jewellry to specialty books to handcrafted pottery and more, you’re sure to find a treasure for everyone on your list.

Christian Dior: History and Modernity by Alexandra Palmer

Selected by Nancy MacEachern, Graphic Designer

“I picked the official Dior exhibition catalogue. I am drawn to this as a lover of Fashion, (yes, Fashion with a capital F) but also as a gift for my most stylish sister-in-law. What is better than a book full of stunning fashion? A book full of stunning fashion and knowledge about one of the most influential fashion designers of all time. A glamourous gift for all the glamourous women (and men) in your life. I can’t wait until Christian Dior opens at Glenbow this coming February!” ($49.95)

Earrings by Anne-Marie Chagnon

Selected by Allison Musial, Production Technician

“The earrings designed by Anne-Marie Chagnon are my go-to gift for the women in my life. You can find styles that are eccentric, edgy, unique, formal or refined, whatever personality you are trying to match. Each set is a miniature work of art. For how stylish these pieces are, they are very reasonably priced.” (From $35.00)

The Sun Came Down: The History of the World as My Blackfoot Elders Told It by Percy Bullchild

Selected by Natalie Creighton, First Nations Educator

“This book is a very good educational tool for people who want to learn about Blackfoot traditional stories, legends and the Napi stories — he is the trickster character that we learn morals from. I started reading this book to my granddaughter around the age of four. She really enjoys it and falls asleep to it — this is the one she always requests for me to read from.” ($37.50)

Royal Scotch Glass by Bee Kingdom

Selected by Rod Bennett, Production Technician

“For my brother-in-law, Jim — he is very interested in the art of hand-blown glass. The bear imprint on the seal is perfect because he lives in Kelowna, which is the Okanagan First Nation’s word for grizzly bear. We both like to sample different whiskeys, so when we get together we will raise a glass of “Uisce Beatha” (old Irish translation for Water of Life/Whiskey) to absent friends and loved ones who are no longer with us.” ($58.00)

Kikkerland Paper Pinhole Camera

Selected by Zoltan Varadi, Communications Specialist

“Recently, I introduced my five-year-old daughter to the family digital camera and she had a lot of fun learning to take photographs. So, I thought I’d get her a camera of her own. This is perfect for a young kid because you don’t have to worry about complicated settings or even focusing, plus it’ll survive getting dropped. It’s pretty cool — you can teach your child how cameras work when you assemble it for them and it uses real film.” ($14.95)

Glenbow Gift Membership

Selected by Jennyce Hoffman, Membership Coordinator

“I believe a Glenbow membership is a unique and great gift for anyone in your life, whether they are family, friends, or work colleagues. A membership is packed full of benefits that bring people back again and again with countless ways to be engaged and immersed in our exhibitions. My personal favourite choice for a holiday gift this year is the Museum Explorer membership. It is the perfect gift for the museum enthusiast or the big travellers in your life; the membership includes access for two adults and up to four youth to over 1,000 museums and galleries all across North America for only $150. ($20.00 to $150.00)
