From Our Collection: Searching for the Northwest Passage

SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 - JANUARY 4, 2015

Organized by Glenbow
Curated by Aimee Benoit

Starting in the sixteenth century, explorers from around the world embarked on a search for an elusive arctic sea route connecting Europe to rich Asian markets. Since the 1960s, Glenbow has built a significant collection of materials relating to this period of northern exploration. This exhibition brings together objects from Glenbow's cultural and military history collections, our Archives and Library, and our art collection: artifacts from important expeditions; original letters, maps and journals; as well as drawings and prints by artist-explorers. This is the largest multi-disciplinary grouping of materials yet exhibited at Glenbow relating to the adventures, mysteries and tragedies that occurred during the four-hundred year search for the Northwest Passage.

Also included in this exhibition is the artwork Horizon by Peter von Tiesenhausen. Created in 2014, the work is an illuminated narrative of a journey through the Northwest Passage.
