Marilyn: Finding Myself through the Arts Available December 1, 2008 until February 20, 2009 The scenario: In 1962, exploited and unhappy, Marilyn fakes her death in order to escape the mad world in which she lives. Exiled to an isolated island, Marilyn finds herself through writing and drawing. Artist, educator and actor Chester Lees portrays the aging Marilyn to tackle issues of self-esteem, pop culture and the ideals of beauty through one of the following activities: portraiture collage, mask-making or visual journaling. I Am an Artist Being an artist isn’t only about creating paintings, drawings or sculptures. Sometimes being an artist is about how you look at the world around you. Slowing down to draw makes us look more deeply and critically. This skill building program will help students focus on their observation skills and drawing techniques to capture the essence of the artifact. Grades 4 - 6 |

Ways of Looking Walk into a work of art and discover the world beyond its surface. Viewing art is more than a visual experience. An art encounter can awaken all of your senses! We will use works of art and sense-tools to develop the skill of looking deeply and explore the role our senses play in perceiving the world around us. Grades 4 - 6 |

Portraiture: Conversations with Art In this program, students will explore questions such as: Who is this? Why did the artist create this portrait? If this artwork could speak, what conversation would we have? Look at portraits from Glenbow Museum’s art and artifact exhibits to compare the various ways artists convey stories through portraiture. My Classroom, My Canvas Gradually transform your classroom into a contemporary art installation. Through a series of activities, students will begin to look at the classroom as an object or collection of objects by isolating the lines, shapes and colours. We will explore concepts such as multiple perspectives, critical thinking, and observational skills in this interactive and exciting outreach. Grades 4 - 6
