We opened up our new exhibitions last weekend and had curator Dr. Hana Leaper at Glenbow to talk about the Sybil Andrews: Art & Life exhibition. We were thrilled to see the Calgary Herald cover this major retrospective by this important English-Canadian artist.
We recently said goodbye to the optical delights that are the Soundsuits of Nick Cave. He continues to make waves in the art world and was recently included in The New York Times’ 2019 Greats Issue which “celebrates four talents who, in mastering their crafts, have changed their fields – and the culture at large.”
Yesterday Glenbow honoured Alberta art icon Katie Ohe as a newly inducted Fellow of Glenbow. Fellows are elected by Glenbow’s Board of Governors in recognition of their outstanding contributions in the humanities, arts and sciences and in advancement of knowledge that supports Glenbow’s goals. Katie Ohe has also recently received the Alberta Order of Excellence which is the highest honour the Province of Alberta can bestow on a citizen. Congratulations Katie!
We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Calgary art community leader and former Glenbow CEO, Jeffrey Spalding who died on Monday, October 14. An artist, curator, critic and educator, Jeffrey’s influence touched every corner of the art scene. His legacy lives on at Glenbow through the estimated 2073 works of art that came into the museum’s collection during his tenure here from 2007 to 2008.
The City of Calgary has announced possible changes to how Calgary’s public art program is managed. City Council put the program on hold in 2017 to review the process of artist selection, installation locations and public engagement.
