How to Volunteer
It is our goal to ensure every volunteer at Glenbow Museum has a great experience, and to provide volunteers with meaningful, challenging, and fulfilling volunteer opportunities.
If you are interested in our program, please review the following section carefully. We want to you be as excited about joining our program as we are to welcome you!
Review the role description we are recruiting for carefully, and note the tasks, shift times, and expectations of the role.
Think about what you are seeking in a volunteer role. Do you want to build on educational or career-related skills? Have you always had an interest in a certain aspect of museums? Perhaps you really enjoy the chance to work with children. Maybe you need volunteer hours for school credit. Or perhaps you just love museums, want to have fun, and meet new people. Consider what is motivating you to volunteer at Glenbow Museum. We want to make sure you have a great experience. By providing us with as much information as possible, we can make that happen.
Consider what your availability is to volunteer. Do you have weekday or weekend availability? How long are you able to volunteer? A few weeks? A few months? Or even longer? The more you let us know about your availability, the better chance we have of finding a good match for you. Some volunteer opportunities are restricted to certain days and times - these are noted in our descriptions. Be sure they fit with your availability and routine - volunteering shouldn't be a burden!
Determine what kind of role you'd really like. Do you get excited about history and love a library setting? Perhaps our Library and Archives is the perfect place for you. Are you considering a career in fundraising or nonprofit management? Perhaps assisting in our membership area will help you learn more. Do you like working with children in a fun educational environment? Our family programs may suit you perfectly. By thinking about what you like to do, and what provides meaning and challenge to your life, you will help us create a great volunteer role for you.
Respect that we have a screening process in place. Candidates are selected for personal interviews based on suitability. Adults aged 18 and over are required to undergo a police records check. A minimum of two references are required. This process in place to ensure maximum success in placing volunteers, and to ensure the safety of everyone at Glenbow Museum. At this time, we are unable to accommodate individuals who need to complete community service hours.
Understand the commitment. Most of our volunteer roles require weekly or bi-weekly shifts, and we need volunteers to accept that responsibility. Are you able to fulfill the expectations of the role? Great - we want to hear from you.
"The volunteers at Glenbow gain positive feedback for their individual talents, and so develop a confident sense of self and of their abilities to contribute to a work environment. You learn that no matter what your attributes are, there is a place where they can affect others in a positive and important way. The individual support for volunteers at Glenbow is so important for youth; they're learning who they want to be." — Andrea W.
