Program Overview

Volunteers assist in all areas of Glenbow Museum. Here are overviews of the various ways volunteers are involved. Please note that we are only recruiting for the specific roles advertised on our Current Opportunities page

Library and Archives

Our Library and Archives contains more than one million items and is used by curators, researchers, students, reporters, and the general public. Volunteers assist in numerous ways and on various projects. Some of the opportunities you can help with include completing research and database updates, assisting with the newspaper clipping collection, the Canadian Pacific Railway database, the art catalogue and poster collection, and our map collection. Library and Archives volunteers should have a knowledge of Alberta and Canadian history, good organizational skills, attention to detail, the ability to take direction, and to work independently. Library, research, and computer skills are great assets but not necessary. Training is provided.

Volunteer shifts are flexible, but must take place between Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Collections Management

Glenbow Museum has collections in art, cultural history, military history, ethnology, and mineralogy. Managing these collections requires the skill and dedication of gifted curators, collections technicians, and conservators. Volunteer roles are varied: you may assist in records management, number and store artifacts, move items, complete research, and more depending on the needs of the staff. Opportunities change frequently, some are short-term and others require a longer commitment. Skills and experience can vary, but volunteers should have some background in the specific role we need to fill. Training, including care and handling of artifacts, is provided. Some flexibility in shifts is available, but all roles take place between Mondays and Fridays.

Museum Shop

The Glenbow Museum Shop is as dynamic and varied as our collections! Our visitors marvel at the choice and quality of the products offered and volunteers play a vital role. For individuals seeking experience in retail or customer service, this is a great opportunity. Your goal is to provide excellent customer service through professional interaction with our customers, assist with the pricing and display of product, help keep the shop neat and tidy, and act as a source of information for visitors. Shift times are pre-determined and require mature, dedicated individuals age 18 and older who are willing to make a commitment of at least six months. Some experience in a retail environment is an asset.

Gallery Tours

Volunteers with a passion for artifacts and history conduct drop-in tours and discussions in our Asian and Mavericks galleries. Volunteers should be comfortable with public speaking, dealing with customers, and understand the importance of good delivery techniques. Extensive training is provided, which volunteers must attend.

Administrative Positions

Volunteers assist in a variety of roles, from data entry in our membership office, to filing artist biographical profiles, to information delivery via phone calls. Good organizational and administrative skills are required for these roles. Shifts may vary depending on projects. Some shifts may be completed from home.

Special Events and Programs

Glenbow Museum hosts a variety of special events and programs throughout the year. Whether it's an exhibit opening, a ticketed special event, or special behind-the-scenes tours, volunteers help in numerous ways at special events. Refreshment servers, greeters, registration sign-in, activity tables, tour escorts, set up and take down - Glenbow Museum volunteers are willing to do it all! Shifts vary according to project needs.

During summer months, or over the course of a special exhibition, we sometimes have volunteer requirements for special programs. Volunteers assist staff by preparing materials, helping visitors complete activities, and provide general information about the museum. Programs and shifts vary according to project needs.
